IFOP-Endrix, on behalf of L’Opinion, measured the popularity of the President of the Republic and the Prime Minister in September.

On the one hand, we see a decline in the President’s approval rating: 17% of French people say they are satisfied with Emmanuel Macron, a drop of 4 percentage points compared to August. This is the second-lowest rating recorded by the President since he took office in 2017. At the same time, the percentage of French people who say they are “very dissatisfied” has reached a record high of 55%.

The highest level of satisfaction is found among his party’s base: 85% of Renaissance supporters say they are satisfied with Emmanuel Macron, a 5-point increase. In contrast, satisfaction has fallen sharply among his core electorate: 46% of voters who voted for him in the first round of the 2022 presidential election say they are satisfied, a 7-point drop. The President of the Republic thus now has a minority of support among this electorate. Declining satisfaction levels are also observed among executives and professionals in higher-level intellectual occupations (25%, down 7 points), 18- to 24-year-olds (24%, down 8 points), and business leaders (21%, down 3 points).

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister’s popularity is also declining: 24% of French people say they are satisfied, a drop of 6 points— a new low for his approval rating. At the same time, the proportion of people who say they are “very dissatisfied” has risen sharply—by 13 points since August—andnow stands at 38%.

Satisfaction remains highest among the President’s core supporters: 86% of Renaissance supporters say they are satisfied, a 7-point increase. Satisfaction also remains the majority sentiment among Emmanuel Macron’s voters from the first round of the 2022 presidential election, despite a sharp decline: 54% say they are satisfied, a 10-point drop compared to August. Higher-than-average satisfaction levels are also seen among Les Républicains supporters (42%), voters for Valérie Pécresse in the first round of the 2022 presidential election (37%), and business executives (33%). Conversely, dissatisfaction is particularly widespread among supporters of La France Insoumise (90%) and the National Rally (89%).

This sharp drop in the executive branch’s popularity comes amid rising fuel prices, which have been the main topic of conversation among the French public this past week (82%). The presidential election ranks second (57%), ahead of the death of Catherine Ringer (47%) and Céline Dion’s concerts in Paris (46%).
