Twenty-five years after September 11, 2001, the terrorist threat remains very high for the French: nearly three-quarters of them—73%—consider it high today, though less so than between January 2015 and the end of 2018, in the wake of the Charlie Hebdo and Porte de Vincennes attacks, followed by the attacks of November 13 and Nice; the perceived threat never fell below 90%, peaking at 99% in the days following the attack on the Promenade des Anglais.
Today, with 73% of respondents perceiving a threat, the level has returned to that recorded in the summer of 2014, a few months before the Charlie Hebdo attack—a level not seen in twelve years. It is also, within two percentage points, the same as the figure from October 2001—75%—in the weeks following the collapse of the Twin Towers.
